An early morning Saturday attempt at a traffic stop ended in a serious wreck where a passenger was injured and the driver jailed, according to Polk County Police reports.
Aaron Colton Puckett, 26, of 645 Woodland Road, Cedartown, was jailed on October 9 around 4 a.m. after leading police on a short chase in Cedartown that ended in a rollover wreck that severely injured his female passenger hours before around 1:30 a.m.
Per the Polk County Police reports, Puckett and the female passenger identified as Catherine Roberson, 23, of a Buchanan address, were driving down Main Street when they passed the reporting officer in a 2009 Ford Fusion without working taillights.
The officer attempted to pull over the pair after they passed him on Marietta Street and followed and watched as the car drove erratically – hitting and riding the curb in front of Lankford Motors, turning onto Ware Street and when refusing to stop after slowing down, police watched as it almost struck the stop sign in the opposite lane.
Police then hit the siren, watched the vehicle speed up, and hit the curb on the right side of the road, driving up on the sidewalk and ultimately traveling up the guidewire of a power pole before flipping over.
Roberson at the time was hanging out of the window, and when the car slammed down on its wheels she was injured when she hit her head and cut her face severely.
Puckett was reported to have apologized to Police on the scene for what happened and looked as if he might run, but Cedartown Police showed up to help just in time for officers to take him into custody.
Redmond EMS reported finding a few tablets of Xanax in Roberson’s pocket. Georgia State Patrol was called out to investigate the DUI, and they pressed charges against Puckett along with those filed by the PCPD.
Roberson was taken to the hospital, Puckett was taken to Polk Medical to have his blood drawn and then onward to the Polk County Jail.
Puckett was charged with a felony for serious injury by vehicle, and misdemeanor charges for DUI – Combination of A1 & A5, Tag Lights Required (what is listed at PCSO… though the report says taillights weren’t working… ? -KtE,) Failure to Maintain Lane, Reckless Driving, Driving on Wrong Side of Roadway, Seatbelt – Adult, and Failure to notify owner upon striking a fixed object.
He remained in the Polk County Jail as of this posting on a $15,000 bond. A warrant was issued to charge Roberson as well with Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance.
