A Rockmart man was jailed on multiple charges and remained in jail following his early Sunday morning arrest on a DUI that saw him tased and dragged out of his vehicle, according to Polk County Police reports.
Officers arrested Gary Doyal M McBryde, 47, of a Rockmart address, after he was pulled over at the intersection at Walmart when a Polk County Police officer got a report around 4 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2023 he was driving recklessly on Highway 278.
McBryde was then spotted driving over a gore (the triangular-shaped part of an intersection) from the westbound to eastbound lane near Walmart, and police pulled him over. The officer noted during his first interaction with McBryde that when he rolled down the window, he immediately smelled alcohol coming from the car.
Rockmart Police were asked to come help, and when the officer who pulled him over asked him to put the car into park, he refused to do so. He was asked multiple times to put the car in park, and finally did so.
When he was asked to get out of the car, McBryde refused. The officer tried to get his seatbelt off to help him out of the car, but McBryde then grabbed the officer’s arm and “gripped it hard.”
The officer stepped back and waited for Rockmart Police to arrive, and when they got to the traffic stop they attempted to get McBryde out a second time, and he was told that “if he did not step out of the vehicle on his own that we would assist him.”
McBryde still refused to get out, so police went into the vehicle to get him out. He began to resist, and police told him he would be tased if he didn’t stop. An officer who came to assist then “drive stunned Mr. McBryde.”
Despite that, McBryde continued to resist and held tightly to the steering wheel until another officer was able to release his grip. McBryde was then dragged out of the car and cuffed. He refused to speak to officers or consent to any testing related to the driving under the influence accusation. He also struggled with officers while being escorted to a patrol car, police reported.
McBryde was taken to the Polk County Jail early on Sunday morning without further incident. He remained in custody without bond set on misdemeanor charges of: driving under the influence, driving on wrong side of roadway, driving in divided highway, controlled access roadways and emergency lanes, improper stopping/parking on roadway, failure to maintain lane and three counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers.
