Two men who were found sitting at night at the Farmer’s Store for more than an hour were stopped from leaving by officers on Wednesday night, and one of them was taken into custody on drug charges after a store clerk called in to say they seemed suspicious.
Police arrested John Wise, 62, of a Douglasville address, after he and another man were initially stopped trying to leave the store on Highway 27 South after they sat in a car on the side of the building for more than an hour. Officers pulled in just in time to keep the vehicle from fleeing from the scene.
According to the report, their behavior for sitting in the car had the store clerk suspicious following “recent store break-ins/robberies that have recently occurred in Polk and Floyd County.”
Since the store was supposed to close at 10 p.m., the clerk was concerned the pair might be there to try and rob the employees and take items inside as they attempted to lock up and leave for the night.
Police were able to identify the drive without issue, but the passenger initially didn’t want to give over his name. It turned out the felony probation violation warrant out for his arrest on previous drug charges were the reason. Along with the trafficking amount of methamphetamine he had in his jacket.
Wise was reported to have told officers he only had a used syringe on his person. Then he admitted he might have a small amount of methamphetamine – just enough for personal use. Instead police found 22.5 grams or just over three-quarters of an ounce, along with a digital scale when he was searched.
Police took Wise into custody without further incident. The driver was not charged in the incident.
He was being held on the felony probation violation warrant out of Douglasville, along with new felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession with intent.
Wise was denied bond and remained in custody as of this posting following his Wednesday night arrest.
