Report: Pair found with a backpack containing drugs during a traffic stop

A Dallas man and an Aragon woman remained in jail with bond denied after being found with meth, heroin, and marijuana in a Dodge Grand Caravan traveling through Rockmart late Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

Lionardo Lora, 38, of 168 Briemli Court, Dallas, remained in the Polk County Jail with his bond denied for felony possession of methamphetamine and possession of heroin, along with misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and seven counts of possession and use of drug-related objects after being taken into custody on Tuesday, August 10.

He was jailed along with passenger Brittany Leeann Padgett, 18, of 3205 Rome Highway, Aragon, who was also charged with felonies for possession of methamphetamine and possession of heroin, along with misdemeanor charges of two counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers, possession of marijuana and seven counts of possession and use of drug-related objects.

Per police, the pair were pulled over on Fairview Road after a Rockmart Police officer got behind them while they were traveling on Highway 278 into town, and made it to Highway 113 when the officer noticed their back turn signal and brake light were out.

Once pulled over, police first questioned Lora behind the wheel who first was unable to tell officers where his license was located, then admitted it was suspended in Florida and he was making payments toward getting it back. He instead produced a Georgia identification card.

Padgett also couldn’t produce her license for officers when questioned and had given a different spelling of her name (Brittiny) which police were unable to find in the state or national databases.

With Lora’s driving status suspended, police took him into custody and explained he would be processed and released from the jail due to current COVID-19 quarantine conditions at the jail. He was searched and miscellaneous items were pulled from his pockets and was taken into custody. While this was going on, Padgett was offered a ride to the BP on Highway 101 by officers as to not be stranded on the side of the roadway, since Lora decided to not allow Padgett take the vehicle and police couldn’t verify if she had a valid driver’s license.

While conducting an inventory of the vehicle, Lora asked officers for his medication and antibiotics, and police found a pill bottle with his name on it and a balled-up receipt. The officer searching took this to Lora who said the pills were his, but that a shard of methamphetamine crystal “was not his.”

The officer searching asked another on the scene to take Padgett into custody, and both were placed in a patrol vehicle while police searched further.

Under the front passenger seat, officers found a backpack containing several types of drugs: methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana, along with glass smoking pipes in a sock, and a pair of roaches (the remaining ends of a joint.) Police also believed that a large quantity of meth had “exploded in his floorboard” but after further testing at the Rockmart Police Department headquarters determined it wasn’t the drugs.

During the arrest, Padgett claimed the drugs weren’t hers that the police could drug test her to find out the truth. Lora did take responsibility for the drugs police found in the vehicle.

After being taken to jail, police did figure out the spelling of Padgett’s name from a previous police report, per Rockmart officials who later charged Padgett with two counts of obstruction for providing a false name after she wrote it on a slip of paper, which was also included in the case file.
