Report: Police find drugs in newly-purchased car after stopping driver for no tag

Christopher Dylan Edwards

A Rockmart man was jailed and later released on bond after he was found to be in possession of drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop and believed to be driving under the influence, Polk County Police reported.

Officers stopped Christopher Dylan Edwards, 28, of 446 Pine Road, Rockmart, early on Saturday morning, February 26, 2022 after he was spotted leaving the Raceway at the corner of Highway 113 and Highway 278.

The patrolling officers followed, and got around a quarter mile up Highway 278 before they stopped Edwards in a black Chevrolet Tahoe that had no plate.

Police reported the smell of marijuana was coming from the car, and asked Edwards for his information. He was unable to produce his physical license, told officers he just bought the Tahoe the day before, and handed over a recent traffic citation he’d just received recently.

Because of the smell of marijuana, officers asked for backup and once they arrived police began to question Edwards about whether he had anything in the vehicle. He admitted to having a THC Vape he just purchased from a gas station, and then when pressed further admitted to having a “personal amount of marijuana on the dash.” Police found that, along with a half of a tablet of Alprazolam, and an open beer that was still over half full in the cupholder.

Edwards refused to take any field sobriety tests on the scene, reports stated.

He was taken into custody without further incident, and the Tahoe was towed away.

Police charged him with a felony for possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, an open container violation and a DUI. No charges appeared in the jail records for marijuana possession.

He was released from jail on the felony and misdemeanor charges after two days in jail on a $3,000 bond.
