A Cedartown man remains in jail this morning after police found ecstasy in his vehicle during a traffic stop on Highway 27 near the Floyd County line, according to police reports.
Officers arrested Markus Demon Watkins, 44, of 730 W. Fairmont Ave., Cedartown, after he was pulled over going 78 mph in a 60 mph zone on Wednesday around 1 p.m. in his 2005 Mercury Montero.
Per the report, police asked Watkins for his license, and was told he had lost his driver’s license and only had an ID card. The reporting officer also noted that he smelled “raw marijuana” inside the car, and asked for backup to help with a search. The reporting officer stated that a check of the window tint was also completed, and was found to be too dark.
When a second officer arrived, Watkins turned over a “brown in color marijuana cigarette” (not sure if this means joint or blunt – KtE) and police got him out of the car.
A search was conducted, and officers also found a clear wrapper containing 11 doses of ecstasy inside of a bag in the front passenger seat. Watkins claimed it was “vitamins” his girlfriend gave him after a surgery and didn’t know what it was. An officer got in touch with a DEA contact who confirmed it was ecstasy.
Police destroyed the joint on the scene. They took the ecstasy into their possession.
After being taken to jail, the reporting officer was notified by staff at the Sheriff’s Office that Watkins was also found with a bag of marijuana he hid in his crotch.
Watkins remained in jail as of this posting with no bond set on felony charges of Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance, and Contraband Across Guard Line. He also was being held on misdemeanor charges of speeding in excess of maximum limits, window tint violation, excessive volume of music from a motor vehicle, a seatbelt violation – adult and failure to have license on person.
