Two teens were taken into custody early Saturday morning after Polk County Police found both in separate cars racing down Highway 278 around 1:40 a.m., according to reports.
Officers arrested Treylin Mikai Davis, 18, of an Aragon address, and Hayden Edward Gibson, 17, of a Cedartown-area address on February 24 after both were caught by a Polk County Police officer who was sitting on Highway 278 between Cedartown and Rockmart running radar.
He first clocked the pair – Davis in Jeep Grand Cherokee and Gibson in a Chevrolet Malibu – going nearly 80 mph while driving side by side on the the highway near the intersection of Hendrix Road. The officer caught up with the pair and made it to nearly 100 mph in what the officer reported was a “speed contest.”
They made it to Fowler Road near Wheeler Road before they were both pulled over.
Davis and Gibson both claimed they were just trying to make it home and both told officers “they did not realize they were going that fast.”
After police asked others in the vehicle if they could take the vehicles home, the pair were taken into custody without incident.
Both were charged with racing, reckless driving and speeds in excess of maximum limits.
Due to his age, no immediate information was available about Gibson’s booking or bond. Davis was booked on the misdemeanor charges and later released the same day on a $2,810 bond.
Davis was the leading scorer during his senior season for the Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets.
