REPORT: Traffic stop on Hogue Avenue ends with drug arrest

Jay William Maxwell

A man who was pulled over on Friday night found himself spending this past weekend in custody where he remains as of this posting on drug and other charges.

Jay William Maxwell, 48, of a Rockmart address, was stopped by officers for a taillight violation at Elm Street at Hogue Avenue on December 15 around 11:15 p.m. Per the report, the officer who made the stop was going to let Maxwell go until a scent of marijuana came from inside the vehicle.

Maxwell initially denied any drugs in the car, but then admitted he “might have a roach” inside the 2005 Honda Pilot he was driving.

Police searched Maxwell first and found nothing, but then went inside the car and ultimately located a little under half an ounce of marijuana, more than a gram of methamphetamine, a digital scale, several types of pills, and a needle.

Police took Maxwell into custody without any further incident.

The drugs were placed in evidence, the Honda was left with a friend, and police destroyed the weed and hypodermic needle.

Maxwell remained in custody on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, counts of possession of a schedule III and schedule IV controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of drugs not in original container, possession and use of drug-related objects and no operating brake lights/signals.
