A pair who told officers they were homeless were arrested after a complaint about a suspicious vehicle brought police to a vacant home, and ultimately found the man and woman in custody when methamphetamine was found inside the vehicle.
James Dewayne Bishop, 35, of a Cartersville address and Shelly Marie Taylor, 37, of a Rome address were both taken into custody early on Tuesday morning after police found them in a van “going to sleep” behind a vacant house on Bellview Road late Monday night.
Officers asked if they had permission to be there, and Bishop told police “probably not,” which immediately made the couple liable for a loitering charge. Police did note the pair were unable to provide any “reasonable explanation” for why they would be parked behind the house.
PCPD asked if they could search the vehicle, and Bishop gave permission. While searching, officers located a bag of suspected methamphetamine inside of a glove.
Neither Bishop or Taylor after being read Miranda rights would take ownership of the bag of meth, and both were taken into custody.
Before being placed in a squad car, Bishop told officers he would take responsibility for the methamphetamine if Taylor could be released.
Instead, officers still took both to the Polk County Jail. Their van was released to another driver per Bishop’s request.
Both were charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Loitering or Prowling, a felony and misdemeanor charge.
Taylor remained in the jail on a $5,500 bond. Bishop is still being held as of this post on a $6,000 bond.
