REPORT: Woman attempted to burn down own house remains in jail

Jessica Louise Jones

A Rockmart woman told police she was “tired of dealing” with her house and lit a recliner on fire while a man was inside and walked away from the flames, according to a report filed this week.

Jessica Louise Jones, 37, of a Clearwater Street address in Rockmart was booked into the Polk County Jail on Wednesday after she admitted to police that she started the fire in her own home inherited from her mother. She is being held with bond denied on a single felony charge of first degree arson.

Per the report, police first got wind of the fire from a man who had been living in the home at the time running out to ask for help from a neighbor, who is also a police officer. The man waived officers down when they arrived on scene, and dispatch was notified to send firefighters immediately to the residence as black smoke was pouring out from the home.

Rockmart Fire and Rescue along with Polk County Fire Rescue both responded to the Clearwater Street home and began to put out the flames. Rockmart Fire Chief Todd Queen reported the home was heavily damaged by the fire that was officially determined to be intentionally set.

In fact, Jones admitted as much to the reporting officer when interviewed.

The report stated that when confronted by officers with what happened, Jones told police the man and his girlfriend living with her at the Clearwater Street home hadn’t been “helping with any responsibilities” and that “if everybody is goign to wreck the house then she will just burn it.”

The report continued with the following from the officer: “Jones stated she took a lighter and lit the recliner on fire. She stated that she was tired of dealing with it.”

The man had told police before Jones was questioned that she had threatened “for several weeks she had been threatening to burn the house down.” The man told police awoke to the smoke in the house and found a recliner on fire and attempted to put out the flames himself, but was unable to do so.

Police noted that a cat was left inside but was able to escape. Police were unable to clear the house prior to the Fire Department’s arrival since the flames and smoke were so heavy no one could enter without protective gear.

Rockmart Police investigators are now involved in the incident following her arrest on scene on the single felony charge for arson.

Additional charges may be pending against Jones as the investigation continues into the fire.
