A woman was charged and booked over the weekend after Polk County Police investigated and found she was responsible for $4,000 worth of savings withdrawn from the account of a Alzheimer’s patient, according to reports.
Officers initially reported the theft back on February 7, 2025, when the husband of the account holder noticed the money missing after a bank card also went missing. The Coosa Valley Credit Union account saw small and large increments withdrawn over a month’s time, totaling up to around $4,000.
The smallest transaction was just $40, while the largest went up to $1,000, all over the span of an 8-day period starting on January 31.
No details were immediately available explaining how Krista Leighann Whittington, 54, of Cedartown-area address, was determined to be the culprit behind the missing money as of the filing of the report.
Felony warrants were taken out eight counts of financial transaction card fraud, and eight counts of elder abuse – exploit/inflict pain to/deprive essential services to disabled person, elder person or resident.
Authorities finally caught up to Whittington over the weekend when she was arrested on Saturday, March 1, for her felony charges along with driving while license suspended or revoked.
She remained in custody on a $33,000 bond.
