REPORT: Woman charged following felony traffic stop for speeding, refusing to immediately stop

Donna Guthrie Black

A woman was charged with a pair of misdemeanors following a traffic stop made at gunpoint after she claimed she was looking for a safe and lighted place to pull over on Highway 278 outside of Rockmart, according to reports.

PCPD arrested Donna Guthrie Black, 60, of a Rockmart-area address on Saturday night, February 15, after she was clocked going over 80 mph in a 65 mph zone on Highway 278 and was passing vehicles in a 2024 Ford Maverick.

An officer who got behind her reported that she failed to stop at several potential locations that would have been safe, and continued into Rockmart until she reached other officers waiting to help with the stop near the intersection of Highway 113. She did maintain the speed limit as the officer followed until she was stopped.

When stopped, she explained why she didn’t immediately pull over and told officers she was seeking a “lighted and safe area in order to pull over,” per the report.

PCPD explained that instead of charging her with fleeing or eluding police, they instead went with lesser charges.

She was released on bond on misdemeanor charges of speeding in excess of maximum limits and failure to yield right of way to an emergency vehicle.
