A Rockmart-area woman was jailed for battery under the family violence act after she attempted to claim that she was a victim of domestic violence instead of being the instigator, according to reports.
However witness statements and physical evidence contradicted the story that Maudie Williams, 50, of a Rockmart address, told Polk County Police on Sunday night, February 23, when they arrived following her calls to 911 claiming she was struck by the victim, who had been drinking and away from the house most of the day following an argument.
He told police that argument started back up when he came home, and turned physical when she grabbed a broomstick (or walking stick, neither party was clear on that in the report -KtE) and struck him in the back. Then she called police, attempting to pin the incident on him and have him taken to jail.
Williams tried to tell police she was struck on the left cheek, but they found no mark. Additionally, a witness provided testimony and video and audio from earlier in the day of her behavior, leading them to believe that she was the aggressor the whole time.
She was taken into custody when police got statements and the stick into their possession, and charged with simple battery under the family violence act.
Williams remains in the Polk County Jail on a $1,000 bond on the misdemeanor charge after she was booked into custody on Sunday night.
