Polk County Police got help from local and state investigators who alleged that a young woman tried to deliberately start a fire in a single-wide trailer, per reports from an arrest made on Tuesday evening.
Police arrested Virginia Faye Dawson, 20, of a Blue Hole Road address after they determined she tried to start a fire in a single wide trailer she and a man were living in together on the property just outside of the Rockmart city limits.
The Tuesday afternoon fire was put out by Rockmart Fire and Rescue and Polk County Volunteer Firefighters, but they suspected something was wrong when they found a smoke detector looked to have been tampered with at the time, and a candle was the ignition source of the fire.
The man in the house at the time told police he saw Dawson going into her room, and then “moments later the house began to fill with smoke” while she ran for the back door and fled.
Dawson and the man were questioned by police at the scene after Rockmart Fire and Police investigators, along with an investigator from the State Fire Marshals Office, looked over what happened and determined the cause of the fire to be deliberate.
She was taken into custody at the scene on Tuesday evening.
Dawson remained in custody without bond on the single felony charge of first degree arson.
