REPORT: Woman ran into building in Independence Day wreck, charged with DUI

Polk County Police arrested a woman on a DUI and other charges on Thursday after she ran into a building on Atlanta Highway at Vinson Mountain Road, according to reports.

Officers arrested Daneil Marie Thorton, 48, of a North Carolina address, was taken into custody around 2 a.m. after her 2020 Chevrolet Malibu ran into Cook’s Motorsports.

When police arrived, they found four people walking around the vehicle and officers figured out who was the driver, who claimed she was driving down Vinson Mountain Road toward Atlanta Highway, she “was confronted by a large white truck” which forced her to go off the roadway, spin out of control and hit Cook’s Motorsports’ front main roll up door.

The door was heavily damaged by the wreck, and the car was also damaged in the wreck.

The interior was still fine, and while an officer was speaking with Thorton they began to smell marijuana coming from within the Malibu. She admitted she had smoked inside, but not prior to the crash.

Police went through a field sobriety test, which per the report Thorton failed.

Then an officer was approached by the building’s owner who had footage of the whole incident.

Thorton’s vehicle approached Vinson Mountain Road in the footage at high speed, fail to stop at the intersection, and went right into the front of the building.

She was taken into custody without incident.

Thorton’s car was searched and officers found partially smoked joints within, but nothing else at the time of the incident.

Thorton was taken onward to the Polk County Jail and later released after being charged with misdemeanors for DUI, failure to yield after stopping at stop sign and possession of marijuana less than an ounce.

She was released on a $3,100 bond.
