A Cedartown woman was jailed on Sunday after she was alleged to have tried to run over a man who when police pulled her over was a passenger in the vehicle.
Rockmart Police reported that they arrested Kenyota Omar Wofford, 32, of 105 N. Martiele St., Cedartown in one report and of 1331 Hull Ave., Rome per the jail, on Sunday for felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of driving while license suspended or revoked and cruelty to children in the third degree – allow child to witness forcible felony/battery/family violence following an incident witnessed by individuals at the Smart Mart at 648 Goodyear Ave., Rockmart.
According to the report, police were called out to Smart Mart for a complaint that a driver was attempting to run over a man in a beige Buick. When officers arrived, the Buick was already moving away and headed down Piedmont Avenue, and was ultimately pulled over by police at the Handy Andy.
Wofford was reported to have gotten out of the vehicle shouting and angry, and ultimately police calmed her down enough to learn that she was driving on a suspended license. Police also learned that the passenger had an loaded pistol on his person, along with a 7 month old child in the vehicle.
During the stop, other officers arrived to report that witnesses stated that an argument between Wofford and the passenger began when he came out of the store, and shouting had turned to action when the man began to walk away and went across the way toward Newcomb Street, when Wofford pulled out and drove up onto the grass and was alleged to have attempted to hit him.
Police released the passenger without incident and gave his pistol back to him. Wofford was taken into custody and remained in the Polk County Jail bond denied as of this posting.
