Robinson new Mayor Pro Tem for City Council, other boards remain same

County Commission, Board of Education stick with same leadership

A split vote between council members on Tuesday evening saw Mayor Sherman Ross having to make a decision on who will be in charge if for some reason he’s unable to make a meeting, or becomes incapacitated.

A 3-2 vote ultimately put Councilmember Marty Robinson in the Mayor Pro Tem’s spot on the Rockmart City Council. Though the position is mainly ceremonial, it is there in case Ross has to be absent from the council for any reason. Robinson would step in to run meetings only if-needed.

Robinson replaces Councilmember Joe Henderson in the job, who received two votes to retain the position during the session.

The vote split and required the Mayor to cast a vote after Councilmember Lucille Harris was absent from the proceedings due to a death in the family, and couldn’t cast her ballot to decide the matter.

Chris Culver and Vicki Mayes retained their positions on the Board of Education.

Other municipal boards also chose their leaders to start off the year on Tuesday evening.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners stuck with Commissioner Hal Floyd as chair of the board for 2023, and Chuck Thaxton as Vice Chair. The pair served through the 2022 year as the chair and vice chair.

Additionally, the Polk County Board of Education chose to keep Vicki Mayes as chair, and Chris Culver as the Vice Chair. The pair of board members served in those roles through 2022 as well.

The only council left to choose members in leadership role at this point to start the year is in Aragon. The City Council will need to choose their Mayor Pro Tem during their upcoming January 19 meeting.
