At least $1,500 worth of drugs were taken off the street and the Rockmart Police Department got to give one of their officers a lot of love and affection for a job well done on Tuesday afternoon.

Rockmart Police Assistant Chief Jonathan Fuller reported that the PD’s new K-9 officer Gena got her first “trafficking-level bust” when she and her handler K-9 Officer Jones were involved in a traffic stop with two suspects at 3:45 p.m. on June 7 on Highway 278.

Per the report from Fuller, Gena was able to alert on drugs in the vehicle after a short roadside investigation, and police found 155 grams (more than five ounces) of methamphetamine and an additional amount of heroin not disclosed was also recovered, along with a glass pipe with suspected narcotics residue found inside.

Police arrested Thomas Wyatt Spires, 41, of 155 Vann Drive, Rome, and Jodi Lynn Stanford, 38, of 1551 Hutchins Mountain Road, Rockmart, on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges during the stop.

No bond had been set yet for Stanford, who remained in the Polk County Jail as of this posting on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs, marijuana or methamphetamine and misdemeanor possession and use of drug-related objects.

Spires also remained in jail without bond set on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs, marijuana or methamphetamine, along with misdemeanor charges of possession and use of drug-related objects, failure to maintain lane and no insurance.
