A handful of volunteers spent time this weekend on Saturday to start up a program as a group to help ensure the Silver Comet Trail remains tidy for locals and visitors alike.
The program – so far being organized through the efforts of the City of Rockmart and Keep Polk Beautiful – brought out a small group to clean a stretch of the Silver Comet Trail along the Euharlee in the area around Church Street and Water Street. Their main goal was to clear brush along the trail and creek for the day.
Mayor Sherman Ross said this was the first of many group-based projects to come in the area.
The cleanup effort comes just days after a second organizing meeting was held in Rockmart to establish a Trail Ranger program for the Silver Comet. The hopes are that volunteers will lend their support to take on either a section of trail, or take part in cleanup days like Saturday and help with beautification efforts along portion of the trail that runs through Polk County.
Additionally, Trail Rangers can also act as advocates for the trail and bringing in visitors to enjoy the area around Cedartown and Rockmart that give visitors a place to stop along the way.
A Facebook group is being developed to support these efforts, and more information is set to come.
