UPDATE: Esom Hill Road shooting victim dies of injury following altercation, no charges yet

Update 4:

Polk County Police are still looking into the events that occurred leading to the death of a Cedartown-area man late this afternoon, but have a better picture of what happened in the immediate aftermath of an altercation on Esom Hill Road.

Authorities were called out to the 2000 block of Esom Hill Road by a witness to the events who reported the gunfire after Mark Adam Griffin, 42, was shot and injured following an altercation with another man who ultimately turned himself into police.

Per Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd, Griffin and the other individual involved got into an argument over a previous trespassing incident, and that argument turned into a physical fight. Both men were armed at the time, and amid the altercation between the two, Griffin was shot and seriously wounded.

The other party has cooperated fully with authorities. An investigation continues, and no arrests have been made at this time, per Dodd.

Griffin succumbed to his injuries while undergoing emergency treatment from AdventHealth Redmond EMS personnel and LifeFlight crews. He was taken from the scene at Esom Hill Road to a landing area around New Harmony Baptist Church, per reports and photos from Polk Today users.

The incident remains under investigation.

Update 3:

The victim of a shooting on Esom Hill Road died of the injury sustained by gunfire today, per the Polk County Coroner’s Office.

Coroner Norman Smith confirmed the death of Adam Griffin, 42, late this afternoon while being treated for injuries sustained in the shooting. They put his time of death at 5:09 p.m. after lifesaving efforts were undertaken by AdventHealth Redmond EMS and the crew from the LifeFlight helicopter sent to airlift him for further emergency treatment.

Griffin was a resident of the Cedartown area.

Polk County Police have not yet released any additional information about the shooter. He is being questioned by investigators after voluntarily turning himself into authorities not long after the incident.

UPDATE 2:

A man involved in a shooting incident on Esom Hill Road gave himself up to authorities this evening, per an update from Polk County Police.

Chief Kenny Dodd reported that one of the two men involved in the shooting this afternoon gave himself up to authorities after contacting police wishing to talk.

Police have detained the man involved for questioning. The incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.

Dodd said the man called officials and stated he wished to discuss what happened.

No additional information about him or the victim are being made immediately available.

The shooting was reported to have been sparked by an argument at a residence on Esom Hill Road sometime around 4 p.m. Emergency personnel were called out to the scene when the victim called 911 to report he had been shot.

No official word on the victim’s condition was yet available at the time of this update. He was set to be transported by Lifeflight to a metro-Atlanta area hospital.

Update:

Polk County Police and other local law enforcement are searching for a man who was involved in an argument and shot another on Esom Hill Road this afternoon.

Chief Kenny Dodd reported that a male victim is being treated and a LifeFlight helicopter was being requested to airlift him for additional aid after he was shot during the incident within the last hour.

Police didn’t yet have a description of the male who fled the scene after the shooting.

A shooting incident has occurred on Esom Hill Road this afternoon.

Multiple officers from the Polk County Police, Cedartown Police, and other emergency personnel responded in western Polk County near the Alabama state line on Esom Hill Road with sirens blaring and at high speed down Prior Station Road to the incident within the last few minutes.

Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd confirmed the incident had occurred after a person called 911 and said they had been shot.
