SIDS Awareness Walk returning to downtown Cedartown on October 23

The third annual A Walk for Hope is returning to downtown Cedartown on October 23 to help raise awareness over a horrible syndrome that takes infants away from families too early in their lives.

Niedra Chubb was back before the Cedartown City Commission on Monday for their regular session seeking permission to hold the walk again this year and shut down Main Street briefly for the noon event, but also to be able to utilize sidewalks for vendors to set up along Prior Street following the brief ceremony in the park after.

She told the Commission this year’s event will include a speaker from First Candle, an organization raising awareness about SIDS and a benefactor of sales of Chubb Crunch cereal.

Additionally, items will be given away this year for both infants and parents to use after the walk and ceremony conclude.

Chubb, who launched the walk back in 2019 after the loss of her son Junior to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, seeks to continue to push for more awareness about how thousands of newborns and infants are lost annually due to a condition still not completely understood.

The walk down Main Street from Ideal Bakery to Holloway Park concludes with ceremonies afterward.

Vendors are being invited to participate this year, and Chubb requests that those who want to take part to reach out to her on Facebook.

Earlier in the year, Nick Chubb launched Chubb Crunch cereal in partnership with PLB Sports & Entertainment, on sale in Heinen’s grocery stores and online. Proceeds from the sale of boxes of the cereal go toward First Candle, a foundation that is working to end Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths as well as support families who have had a loss.

Commissioners gave their permission for the walk to go ahead, and so long as business owners don’t have conflicting issues with vendors on the sidewalk, allowed that as well with a unanimous vote during the October 11 meeting.

Check back for more coverage of the event coming up on October 23.
