Special elections coming in March for trio of local races

Local races are bringing voters back to the polls in the coming months for a round of Special Elections for one position and two ballot resolutions.

The Polk County Board of Elections approved requests on Wednesday, January 8, to call for the Special Elections set for March 18, 2025 after requests came in from the City of Aragon, the City of Cedartown and the Board of Education.

The City of Aragon is calling for their election to be held in March to fill the seat left open by the untimely passing of Council Member Donnie Canada in December. Canada, who was just sworn in for a new term in January 2024, had three years left to serve on the council when he died.

Qualifying for the council seat is coming up at the end of the month starting on Monday, January 27 through Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at the Elections Office at 144 West Ave., Cedartown. The period is open during regular business hours through the three days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More to come on the special election for the City of Aragon to come.

Two additional ballot resolutions are up for consideration by voters locally as well. Voters within the city limits of Cedartown will get to decide whether they will allow for a TAD to be setup around the area of the shopping complex at the corner of Davis Road and the Highway 27 bypass, and one in the city limits in the downtown area. The Tax Allocation District provides benefits for business owners, and some collections within the area are specifically earmarked for improvement of the overall zone.

Earlier in the week, the Board of Education approved a resolution seeking to get on the ballot for March to give the voters a choice of whether to apply a single mill of property tax collections annually to sell bonds and receive $34 million to pay for school expansion costs. The bonds would be paid back over 20 years at a 6% interest rate, and the special millage rate would remain in place until those were completely paid. (Meaning if collections came in above what was expected, then the bonds would be paid off faster and the mill be removed.)

Registration for this upcoming election will end on February 18, and early voting is set to run from February 24 through March 14 at both the Cedartown and Rockmart precincts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Check back for additional information leading up to the elections on qualifying for Aragon candidacy, registration, voting dates and locations, and more as needed.
