A title changeover is one item already going forward, but a property transfer in downtown Cedartown is also up for a decision in the coming weeks thanks to a new Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Cedartown and Polk County government that is being developed.
Many years back when the city transferred the Polk County Animal Control building over in the West Industrial Park in Cedartown to the County government, it turns out that one piece of the process was never completed: the deed wasn’t ever signed over.
So all this time while the County Animal Control has operated the facility on Veal Street, it has remained under the technical ownership of the City of Cedartown.
Both local governments are now working to fix the problem.
During the Tuesday session of the Polk County Commission, they voted on a Memorandum of Understanding between the city and county that takes care of the problem and officially transfers the deed and ownership of the facility over to the county where it should be.
City Manager Edward Guzman said the other half of the MOU is still under consideration by the city, and likely to be decided upon in August.
The old County Extension Office near the corner of East Avenue and Main Street remains without occupants after the Polk County Extension Service office relocated down the street to a portion of the former headquarter of Cedarstream.
After several years sitting empty, Guzman said the city is considering taking over the building from the city. Plans for what to do with the building are still up in the air, Guzman said.
He added that the decision to take on the building space wasn’t set in stone.
