Two jailed on drug charges following early morning Hwy. 278 traffic stop

Fentanyl and Methamphetamine were found when a Tennessee man and woman were stopped early Friday morning in Rockmart by Polk County Police, according to reports.

Kevin M Clements and Chelsey Smith, both of Tennessee addresses, were taken into custody after they were stopped by officers after 2 a.m. on Friday, March 29, after their car was observed unable to maintain its lane several times heading into Rockmart on Highway 278.

The officer who watched them driving pulled the pair over as they got into Rockmart and stopped at the Jefferson’s where police sought to identify the man behind the wheel and a woman asleep in the passenger seat, who “appeared to be alert” after being woken up. The officer questioned the driver identified as Clements and Smith, and learned that neither had a valid driver’s license.

Clements was detained due to driving on a suspended license, and Smith was removed from the car since police found a glass pipe on Clements while he was taken into custody that he admitted having in his pants pocket.

A search of the car yielded several bags of meth, and aluminum foil-wrapped fentanyl along with empty bags used for sale, and a Taurus 38 Special handgun. Officers weighed the bags of meth after and found 1 pound, 3 ounces of the drug.

When questioned, Smith claimed she knew nothing about the narcotics and was only getting a ride to Chatsworth from Clements. Clements claimed he knew nothing about any additional meth in the car or the handgun, only claiming to possess what was on him at the time.

Smith was later found at the Polk County Jail with a straw that contained fentanyl residue on it, and admitted the aluminum foil believed at first to be heroin during the search of the car was also fentanyl.

Both were booked into the Polk County Jail where they remained with bond denied on felony and misdemeanor charges.

Clements, 34, of Charleston, Tennessee, remains in custody on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, trafficking in methamphetamine or amphetamine, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. He also was booked on misdemeanor charges of driving while license suspended or revoked and failure to maintain lane.

Smith, 36, of Old Fort, Tennesseee, was found to be lying about her date of birth to officers after they contacted authorities in Collegedale, Tennessee. She was booked into custodyon felony charges of possession of methamphetamine; drugs: manufacture/deliver/distribute; trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs, marijuana or methamphetamine; possession of tools for the commission of a crime; possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies; possession of firearm by convicted felon or first offender; crossing state/county guard line with weapons, intoxicants, drugs without consent; possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as well as misdemeanor charges of giving false name, address or birthdate to law enforcement officers and obstructing law enforcement officers.

Though the pair claimed not to know one another, Charleston and Old Fort, Tennessee are within the same general area of Cleveland, Tennessee.
