UPDATE: Authorities identify Rockmart man killed on Highway 278 on Sept. 10

A week after passersby found a man dead on Highway 278 near the intersection of Substation Road overnight on September 10, authorities are now able to release his name to the public.

Georgia State Patrol is hoping the public can help find the vehicle responsible for the death of Jonathan Higgins of Rockmart last week, who was found in the roadway dead in the early morning hours last Friday within the Cedartown city limts.

Higgins, 39, of a Rockmart address, was reported by Polk County Coroner Norman Smith earlier this morning as the victim of a hit-and-run death being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol last week.

Per the Georgia State Patrol’s information so far on the open investigation, they reported that an unknown vehicle was heading west sometime around midnight on Sept. 10 in the right lane, and Higgins was walking westbound in the right lane at the time.

“The driver of (the vehicle) struck the pedestrian with the front of the vehicle,” the GSP reported. “After impact, the driver of (the vehicle) fled the scene and was not located.”

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team came to the scene at the time and is conducting an independent investigation.

Those with information about the hit-and-run can contact Georgia State Patrol’s Cartersville Post at 770-387-4056.
