The Georgia State Patrol released additional information this morning about a wreck on Thursday evening that took the life of one driver after a collision with a Polk County Police Department cruiser on Highway 278.

Per the GSP release, Britt Madden Sr., 79, of Cedartown, died as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck on February 16, 2023. He was transported to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center after the wreck, and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials so far have determined that the wreck happened at 7:20 p.m. on Highway 278 and Hutto Road, and that Madden – driving a gray Dodge Charge – was attempting to cross the highway onto Lindsey Road when he was struck by the PCPD cruiser with emergency equipment running toward a scene.

GSP is still investigating the incident, and not all the details are fully available.

The Madden family is asking for thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
