A Cedartown-area man was jailed and remains facing vehicular homicide and other charges, and another is dead after a hit-and-run incident early Sunday morning.
Polk County Coroner Norman Smith reported this morning that an individual was able to identify Barry Ford, 52, of Cedartown as the previously-unknown victim of the December 12 hit-and-run incident.
He was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:55 a.m. by Smith after being struck by a Ford Ranger that was found not far from South Main Street and Cason Road where the incident took place.
The Georgia State Patrol took Jason Myles Ingram, 41, of 59 Winkle Road, Buchanan, into custody on a felony charge of homicide by vehicle first-degree non hv, and misdemeanor charges of failure to report an accident with injury/death/damage and a DUI.
GSP officials reported in a release that the incident was first reported around 6 a.m., when troopers were called out by local police from the Cartersville Post to come and investigate a fatal vehicle versus pedestrian crash.
When they arrived at the scene at South Main Street and Cason Road, they found Ford was struck, and then Ingram was alleged to have fled the scene and ended up at Benedict Loop near the intersection with Benedict Loop at Highway 27, less than 2 miles down the road.
Per police, they found Ingram inside and possibly intoxicated, and when the Trooper who arrived on scene began to investigate determined Ingram had been driving under the influence and “was involved in the crash with the pedestrian.”
He was taken into custody shortly after and charged.
Ingram was being held without bond this morning and still faces a hearing to determine if he will be allowed a bond at all.
Ford’s body was taken yesterday to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy and to be identified. He died from the wounds sustained in the hit-and-run on Sunday morning.
GSP reported that the crash investigation remained open this morning.
