VOTE 2024: Primary Runoff Day arrives for Polk

The polls are open and the time has come to cast a ballot for the Primary Runoff for two County Commission seats locally, or the Districtwide Democratic primary for the Congressional seat.

Voting opened at 7 a.m. at Polk’s seven precincts across the county for today’s vote.

Early voting for the runoff concluded this past Friday, with a total of 1,453 votes cast in total between the two early voting precincts and paper ballots returned to the Board of Elections at week’s end.

Cedartown saw 807 voters cast a ballot, and Rockmart had 533 votes cast.

Voters are deciding on two countywide races for the GOP Primary Runoff. The District 1 race features incumbent Jordan Hubbard and challenger Michael Gravett. District 3’s race features incumbent Ray Carter and challenger John Paschal.

Democratic voters are deciding the choice of who will be taking on Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to settle their choice for the 2024 general election challenge. Voters are deciding the race between Clarence Blalock and Shawn Harris (a Polk County resident) to determine who will face Greene this fall.

Here’s an example from the Board of Elections on how voting works for the Primary Runoff:

For example, if you voted a republican ballot in the May 21st General Primary Election, you may only vote on a republican ballot in the June 18th Runoff Election. Additionally, if you voted a democratic ballot in the May 21st General Primary Election, you may only vote on a democratic ballot in the June 18th Runoff Election.

If you did not vote at all or you voted a nonpartisan ballot in the May 21st General Primary Election, you may vote in either the republican or democratic June 18th Runoff election.

Polls are open in Cedartown at the Goodyear Civic Center on Prior Street; the Nathan Dean Community Center in Rockmart on Goodyear Avenue; Aragon City Hall on Highway 101; Camp Antioch on Antioch Road; Pine Bower Baptist Church on Pine Bower Road; Lake Creek Baptist Church on Highway 27 North at Lake Creek Road; and Victory Baptist Church on Highway 278.

Results of today’s vote will be tallied after polls close at 7 p.m. Check back for tallies when they become available from the Board of Elections.
