VOTE 2025: Polling finished for March 18 ballot questions

NOTE: Numbers were updated with preliminary vote tallies from all precincts as of 10:48 p.m.

Polk County Elections Director Noah Beck (seated) and Board of Elections Chair Richard Long wait for additional election machine cards to be returned to the board office for processing on Tuesday evening, March 18, 2025.

Voters have made their voices heard once again as the March 18 questions on the ballot for the Board of Education’s millage rate proposal, and the City of Cedartown’s redevelopment powers request were up for decision in the latest trip to the ballot box.

Early voting numbers came in at 3,033 ballots cast countywide over a three week run that included two Saturday voting opportunities at the polls in late February and earlier this month. Both the Cedartown and Rockmart precincts were open for early voting.

Here’s a breakdown of the voting for the March 18 special election (Editor’s note – numbers were updated as of 10:48 p.m. – KtE):

Polls closed this evening at 7 p.m. to wrap up the first opportunity for a vote since the November 2024 Presidential Election, with the Board of Education millage rate question on the ballot the only countywide item on the ballot for the March 18 vote. The PSD sought the request through the board to add a special 1 mill increase in local property taxes funding the district that would run for no more than 20 years to pay back $34 million in bonds they wish to issue to pay for building repairs and expansion above what the E-SPLOST has funded.

Only Cedartown residents got the opportunity to choose whether to give the City of Cedartown redevelopment powers to negotiate and create Tax Allocation Districts, or TADs, used in a variety of ways such as bringing new commercial businesses to the city limits. The TAD the city wants to create with these powers is set to help entice Publix to Cedartown, along with other outlying businesses on property on Davis Road at the Highway 27 bypass.

Machine processed results from early voting and the Cedartown precinct were posted directly to tell the tale of the tape on Tuesday evening for 2025’s first opportunity for ballot counting.

Aragon didn’t need their special election called earlier in the year, as new Council Member David Spaulding will take over the seat left open by Council Member Donnie Canada, who passed away unexpectedly in late 2024.

Since he was the only candidate to qualify for the special election, he takes over the seat without any opposition.
